🧬 Veterinary Technology – Evolution or Revolution?
In the world of veterinary medicine, the wave of technological innovation is redefining what’s possible in animal healthcare. This isn’t just a change; it’s a revolution, reshaping every aspect of veterinary practice from diagnostics to treatment and even the very nature of the veterinarian-client-patient relationship.
In this article, we explore the advancements themselves, their profound impact on the field, and the implications for veterinary professionals and the animals you care for. So, with the help of leading members of our veterinary community, here are some of the key technology innovations that will be game-changing over the next year or so and what that may mean for hospitals, clinics, and team members…
🐶 A Life-Extension Drug for Big Dogs Is Getting Closer to Reality
There’s a well-established inverse relationship between a dog’s size and its expected lifespan. Bernese mountain dogs and Great Danes live just six to eight years, for example, while corgis can live up to 15 years and Chihuahuas up to two decades.
San Francisco biotech company Loyal wants to close that gap, and is developing an experimental drug to extend the lifespan and improve the quality of life of large and giant dog breeds. Today, the company announced that based on early data, the US Food and Drug Administration has determined that Loyal’s drug has a “reasonable expectation of effectiveness.” The company hasn’t yet shown that its drug actually extends lifespan, but the FDA decision signals the agency’s confidence in Loyal’s approach, and the drug will soon be tested in a bigger trial.
💼 New Veterinarians Earned More in 2023
The starting salaries for new veterinarians rose in 2023, according to the American Veterinary Medicine Association’s Graduating Senior Survey. New graduates entering companion animal practices received the highest annual compensation, averaging $133,000. Those entering equine practice earned $95,000, which was up significantly from a $65,000 starting salary in 2021.
🔍 What’s Going on With Veterinary Consolidation?
According to Idexx data, the acquisition of independent practices declined by 68% - from 1,550 in 2021 to an estimated 500 in 2023. Now that practice valuations have returned to pre-COVID figures, it is time to realize that 18 times EBITDA multiples were a momentary surge and are reverting to their typical range of eight to 13 times. As the market levels out, now is a prime moment for independent practice owners to look under their businesses’ hood and identify improvement areas.
